2008 AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross Championship Series /
2008 AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships

Rules and Information

The 2008 AMA EnduroCross schedule includes six (6) events that comprise two separate AMA championships.  The AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross Championship Series is for the Expert Class only; the AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships incorporates the Support Classes.

Expert Class racers will acquire national championship points for each event they participate it, with the AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross Championship being awarded to the Expert competitor who acquires the most points throughout the season.

For Support Class racers, although they can participate in as many events as they please, they technically ONLY need to participate in an EXGC Regional Qualifier to qualify for the EXGC Finale (final round).  The winners of each of the four (4) Support Class Main Events at the EXGC Finale will be crowned AMA EnduroCross Grand Champions.

How It Works
There are two portions of an EnduroCross event. There are the Daytime Qualifiers for the Support Class and non-seeded Expert Class riders; then there is the Evening Program which includes the Support Class Main Events, Expert Heats/Semi Races, the Dash for Cash and the Expert Main Event. (At ONLY the Las Vegas FINAL round, the format will be split over two days with the Qualifiers taking place on Friday and the Evening Program on Saturday night. At all other rounds the Qualifiers and Evening Program will both take place on Saturday.)

2008 AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships (EXGC)
EXGC Regional Qualifiers:

  • Saturday, July 5; Las Vegas, NV - Orleans Arena
  • Saturday, August 16; Guthrie, OK - Lazy E Arena
  • Saturday, September 13; Florence, SC - Civic Center
  • Saturday, September 27; Denver, CO - National Western Complex
  • Saturday, October 4; Columbus, OH - Ohio State University (Schottenstein Center)
  • Friday, November 21; Las Vegas, NV - Orleans Arena

EXGC Finale:

  • Saturday, November 22; Las Vegas, NV - Orleans Arena

EXGC / Support Classes
There are four Support Classes to choose from which are all part of the new 2008 AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships. You may enter more than one class as long as you meet the criteria. You MUST be an AMA member to enter. Rider registration MUST be done online prior to the event. We do not accept onsite or day-of-race entries.

  • TrialCross (EXTC): Any size Trials motorcycle or any motorcycle with a wheelbase under 55 inches. Bikes like the Honda CRF150 will be allowed. Trials tires are allowed on any motorcycle in this class. Must be 16 years of age as of race date. Maximum of 20 race entries.

  • Open 2-Stroke (EX2S): Any size 2-stroke motorcycle with a wheel base over 55 inches. Trials motorcycles are not allowed. Trials Tires are NOT allowed. Must be 16 years of age as of race date. Maximum of 40 race entries.
  • Open 4-Stroke (EX4S): Any size 4-stroke motorcycle with a wheel base over 55 inches. Trials motorcycles are not allowed. Trials Tires are NOT allowed. Must be 16 years of age as of race date. Maximum of 40 race entries.

  • Vet- Plus 35 (EXVet): Any production motorcycle with a wheel base over 55 inches. Trials motorcycles are not allowed. Trials Tires are NOT allowed. Must be 35 years of age as of race date. Maximum of 40 race entries.

EXGC Format:

  • AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships (EXGC)
    • Overall support/amateur level Grand Championships for multiple classes which includes the EXGC Regional Qualifiers and EXGC Finale (see above schedule)
      • Not to be confused with the AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross Championship Series, a cumulative national championship point’s series for expert/pro riders, which will be run in conjunction with the EXGC
    • Includes four (4) Grand Championship classes (EXGC Classes above) which will crown individual “National Grand Champions” and award AMA #1 Plates
    • Upon entry, riders will be randomly assigned to a group. Every rider receives one practice session. Each class above will have a series of Qualifiers to determine the top ten riders in each class. These top ten riders from each class will transfer to the Support Class Main Event in the Evening Program (see schedule).
  • EXGC Regional Qualifiers
    • Events referred to as AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships – Regional Qualifiers
    • Winners referred to as “AMA EnduroCross Regional Winners”, or having won an “AMA EnduroCross Regional”
    • Riders finishing 1st-2nd at the EXGC Regional Qualifiers in each of the four designated EXGCClasses will qualify directly to the class Main Event at the Las Vegas EXGC Finale.
      • Riders are permitted to participate in multiple EXGC Regional Qualifiers, but will be only “qualified” to the EXGC Finale once, thus allowing additional riders the allotted qualifying positions.
        • EXAMPLE: If a rider who is already qualified for the EXGC Finale rides another EXGC Regional Qualifier and again finishes in a qualifying position (1st or 2nd), the 3rd place rider would be qualified and so on.  (Essentially, the first two non-qualified finishers will be qualified for the EXGC Finale.)
    • Riders are permitted to ride multiple classes, including EXGC Classes and the Expert Championship class;
      • BUT, if they finish on the podium (1st, 2nd, 3rd) in an Expert Championship class Main Event, they will NOT be permitted to compete at the Las Vegas EXGC Finale; thus forfeiting their chance for an AMA EnduroCross National Grand Championship.
        • EXAMPLE 1: If a rider chooses to race both an EXGC class (support/amateur) and the Expert Championship class at the same event (EXGC Regional Qualifier/Championship Round), then makes the podium in the Expert Main Event; they would not be eligible to race the Las Vegas EXGC Finale.
        • EXAMPLE 2: If the winner of the support/amateur Dash-for-Cash chooses to accept the opportunity to ride in the Expert Main Event and then finishes on the podium, he would no longer be eligible for the Las Vegas EXGC Finale. (see below)
      • ALTHOUGH, the aforementioned rule (2.d.i) does not apply for the final event (EXGC Finale/Final Championship Round) in Las Vegas, for by the time the Expert Main Event is run, the EXGC Champions will have been determined and those riders will then be eligible to ride the Expert Main Event.
  • EXGC Finale
    • Event referred to as the AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships Finale
    • Riders must qualify through an EXGC Regional Qualifier (see above).
    • An EXGC Main Event will be held for each of the four (4) EXGC Classes and each winner will be crowned the “AMA EnduroCross National Grand Champion,” or referred to as having won an “AMA EnduroCross National Grand Championship,” and awarded an AMA Number #1 Plate.
      • Each EXGC Main Event will have a minimum of twelve (12) eligible (Qualified) riders; two (2) riders from each of the six (6) EXGC Regional Qualifiers.
        • If prior to the final EXGC Regional Qualifier in Las Vegas on November 21, it is determined that any number of the “Qualified riders” will not be participating in the EXGC Finale the following day, the number of riders qualified from the final EXGC Regional Qualifier may be adjusted appropriately to fill the field for the EXGC Finale.

 2008 AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross Championship Series:

  • Saturday, July 5; Las Vegas, NV - Orleans Arena
  • Saturday, August 16; Guthrie, OK - Lazy E Arena
  • Saturday, September 13; Florence, SC - Civic Center
  • Saturday, September 27; Denver, CO - National Western Complex
  • Saturday, October 4; Columbus, OH - Ohio State University (Schottenstein Center)
  • Friday-Saturday, November 21-22; Las Vegas, NV - Orleans Arena

EnduroCross Points System
The AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross Championship Series will be based on the AMA Sports championship points system. The rider with the most championship point’s after all six (6) rounds will be crowned the AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross National Champion.
Championship Points will be awarded for each round as follows:
1st       30 points
2nd      25 points
3rd       21 points
4th       18 points
5th       16 points
6th       15 points
7th       14 points
8th       13 points
9th       12 points
10th     11 points
11th     10 points

In the case of a tie, the best result in the Las Vegas final round will be the tie breaker.

Expert Class (Championship Class)
Riders are eligible to race multiple classes, including any of the Support Classes from above and the Expert Class.
Please note: Riders who finish on the podium in the Expert class Main Event will NOT be eligible to participate in the EXGC Finale for a Support Class Grand Championship.

Class Requirements: Any production motorcycle with a wheel base over 55 inches. Trials motorcycles are not allowed. Trials Tires are NOT allowed. Must be 16 years of age as of race date. Maximum of 80 race entries.

Upon entry, riders will be randomly assigned to a group. Every rider receives one practice session and a minimum of two Qualifier sessions to determine which riders will transfer to the Evening Program. A minimum of ten riders (possibly more depending on turn out at each venue) will be selected to participate in the Evening Program. At the end of the Qualifier sessions you will need to check with Race Referee and result board to determine if you have transferred.

The Evening Program: Support Class Main Events / Dash for Cash / Expert Championship

The Evening Program will consist of the Support Class Main Events (see above), the DirtRide Dash for Cash, and the Expert Championship races (Heat Races, Semi Races, Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) and the Main Event.)

DirtRider Dash for Cash: A bonus race that will include the top three riders from each of the Support Main Events will take place during the Evening Program (see schedule). There will be a $1,000 total purse ($500 to 1st, $300 to 2nd, $200 to 3rd) for each event courtesy of DirtRider Magazine. The winner of the Dash for Cash will also qualify to transfer to the Expert Class Main Event (final race of the Evening Program). If the Dash for Cash winner is a TrialCross rider, they must ride a non-“TrialCross” production bike in the Expert Main Event. (See rules of any other class).

Also, please note that the Dash for Cash winner, a Support Class rider, has the option as to whether or not to ride the Expert Main Event; because if they were to finish on the podium they would no longer be eligible to participate in the EXGC Finale for a Support Class Grand Championship.  (see above)

Seeded Riders:
These riders automatically transfer to the Evening Program and the Expert Main Event.

  • Former EnduroCross Champions: Ryan Hughes, John Dowd, David Knight, Taddy Blazusiak
  • The top ten riders in Championship Points coming into the event.
